Dear Editor
As a voice to the voiceless, I wish to bring to your attention the growing level of corruption among municipal officers in Harare.
Harare City Parking officers have become corrupt and their new cash cow is the porous parking system.
It has become a nightmare and almost impossible to secure parking, without bribing the officers.
Everyone from the top echelons to the lowly ranked openly ask for bribes.
In Bulawayo, drivers are double paying within an hour, meaning if they pay their parking fees and are done with their business before an hour lapses and move to park on a different bay, they are charged again.
The Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission is thus sleeping on the job.
They seem to be the only people unaware of this cancer and often fail to take any corrective measures even after receiving complaints.
They ignore the citizens’ cries and work in cahoots with the municipal officers.
Desperation and ignorance from the drivers has caused them to pay the bribe and extra amounts when they can take simple steps in this regard, like recording and exposing these culprits on social media.
Surely, no one leaves their homes with a budget to pay for someone’s lunch.
An inquiry should be set up to rectify this rot.
The image of the corporation seriously needs to be improved to restore public faith in the system.
